MSA Contest Report, 13 th April, 2008
Report by Steve Bligh.
Our second contest of the year was held at North End, in solid overhead surf. Conditions were offshore for most of the morning. The wind dropped before noon, with an awesome display of lightning & thunder for about half an hour. The rain, thunder, & natural lightshow passed, leaving smooth lefts & rights off Stormy for the finals. Smooth, but with big closeout sections & the occasional bomb sets. Big lefts provided finalists with the best scoring potential. Getting them was not so easy. Compared to our March contest, held in micro conditions, the April contest put the pressure on us to use our best wave selection & to charge hard.
Girls Five girls turned up ready to surf, but the storm meant that this straight-out final was cancelled. However, all these girls will receive equal points for this month's contest. Good on ya, girls: Tayla Ayshford, Clare Coleman, Olivia Miley Dyer, Phoebe Miley-Dyer, & Darcy Bellanto.
Micro Grommets We ran two heats for the kids. Mums, Dads, & helpers were out in force to make sure the Groms had safe, serious fun. In front of Maroubra Surf Club we had a decent reform that some of the kids could paddle into. Well done Connor McCue & Frankie Devine who paddled into all their waves! The other Groms were pushed onto waves, got to their feet, milking the waves for what they were worth. Kyle Davis is developing his technique, doing lots of little turns which one day will become big hacks! Some of the other Groms are also pushing the boundaries, turning & trimming across green faces. The thunderstorm swept across the sky like a black blanket- for safety's sake, we stopped after the second heat, cancelled the Micro Grommet final, & ran for shelter with grins on our faces. On another matter, one of our Micro Groms- Jai Filetti- is undergoing a knee reconstruction after a recent rugby injury. He's possibly the youngest Australian to undergo this procedure. He's seven years old. We're behind ya Jai- get well soon!

Cadets The big surf was handled maturely by the Cadets. They carefully chose the best paddle out, & pretty much ripped the Dunny Bowl rights to shreds. Occasionally a left was taken, at the risk of getting caught inside. By the time of the finals, the lefts were the go. These guys ripped like the older crew- but without the same power… that'll be coming soon.

Juniors Like the Cadets, these guys handled the overhead sets like experienced watermen. Their turns were strong, fast, & top to bottom surfing was typical of the finalists.

A Grade Open
The whole A Grade ripped, but in the end it was a close duel between Matt Phillips & Max Ayshford. Steve Scott was noticeably carving cutbacks like his two-times World Champion father. Luke Kennedy was showing potential, but didn't get the waves. Damien (Doobie) didn't quite get the moves & the waves- which is unusual when you see him free surf. Matt (Floppa) got the high scoring waves early in the final, surfing with amazing speed & vertical power. However, he ran out of puff in the last half. Maxy destroyed a long set left around then, but spent most of the heat getting nothing else. That's no good when you need two waves, not simply one. Then, within a minute or two of the last hooter, he paddled into another set left, slammmed his board up into the first section. On top of the lip- he rotates his board 180 degrees into a reverse, recovers, & sequentially carved cutback after cutback & reo right to the shore. Matt surfed well- but Max kept cool, focused, & pulled out the moves that won him the final.

B Grade Open
We had good participation from the crew that represent the bulk of Maroubra's surfing community- competent, & on their day hot. Welcome to the new competitors who are getting their heads into this contest surfing. And guys- look at the heat draw to make sure you turn up when you're due to paddle out! Performances were varied during the two heats. However, one guy shone- Luke Molnar. If any of you have seen surfer-shaper Simon Andersen's backhand attack, that was what Luke's surfing was like. Big lefts, hard bottom turns, vertical, upside-down snaps under the lip.

Masters
Together with A Grade Opens, this was our biggest division on the day. Four heats, two Semis, & a Final… all in solid conditions. From the outset, Richard White attacked the sets. Fearless, big moves in critical sections. Simon Sigley was looking like Kelly Slater in one weightless lipline re-entry. The standard was high, & the guys who got the waves & performed repertoire of fast, powerful moves got the big scores. It was no fluke that saw Macca, our President, rip those lefts into first place.
1 st Paul McAnneney 2 nd Nick Griffin 3 rd Peter Cameron 4 th Pete Donohue 5 th Pat Saunders
Our next contest is 7am, Sunday 11 th May, meeting at North End. This is the day after our Regional Titles- the Southside Eliminations. And don't forget this Friday night at the Hotel, 5:30pm, for Max's support night!
