There is a Maroubra surfing community and this would be our event. As the sun lowered in the valley and the clock struck 4pm on Saturday 3rd December 2011 at the Maroubra Bowling Club, so began an afternoon of celebration for the Maroubra Surfers Association (MSA). Our surfing community - mates, neighbours, familiar faces, hot surfers and vibrant characters – we all gathered. Winners? The day was full of winners! Just being there, we all felt like winners.  But the true test of a surfing community – are the supporters, sponsors, the people who provide the prizes.  Several wish to remain anonymous, some are local old boys that believe in the club, some are surf industry. All are generous. All deserve enormous thanks and respect.  These people contributed to our surfing community.

Huge thanks to: Kylie at Maroubra Surf ‘n’ Skate for wetsuits, deck grips, leg ropes and wax; Surf Dive and Ski for gift vouchers, Steve Harrison from
www.globalsurftag.com , www.localmotion.com.au  , Zebra Café, Bligh Plumbing, PCC, Bondi Surf Co, Mondo Kitchens, Dr Paul Raftos at Maroubra Medical Centre, Mr Barry Dixon, John McLoughlin for web management, Maroubra Bowling Club for the venue and Randwick City Council.  On behalf of all MSA members – thank you.

And the winners? All of us! Though a few winners require mention, especially those that put in double the effort.  I notice Mitch Kennedy made the winners circle in both the Juniors and the A-Grade. Now here is a surfer getting out of his comfort zone, throwing himself into competition with better surfers, which is a proven method to improve your surfing. Joey Michaels, winner of the Juniors, put plenty of time in the water and was one of the most improved surfers.   The stage was set as MSA President Corey Adams took the microphone. Mr Adams is a great orator. He spoke with clarity, passion, wit and humour. As leaders do, Corey congratulated every winner and offered words of encouragement.
